The audience tape of 12/18/73 apparently hasn't circulated since the '90s - the SBD surfaced in '96. But the AUD has finally appeared in digital format, and it's quite a good one.
It's the complete show, in excellent sound, very close to the stage - it sounds like you're right in front of the band. (We've heard bits of it before, since Charlie Miller used it as a patch for the SBD cuts.)
There's surprisingly little crowd noise. The sound is a bit imbalanced, though - recorded in stereo, the band is mostly over in one channel for some reason. Weir is louder than Garcia, and Keith can hardly be heard. Otherwise it's almost as clear as the SBD.
Probably for completists only, since I'm not sure it offers much that you don't get on the SBD. But it should show up on the Archive soon.

Thanks LiA!
This recording has been discussed the last few days on another board that I frequent...
So far I have heard nothing but rave reviews there for this source. I haven't had a chance to hear it for myself, but it is on my near future to do list. now you really have me curious. Guess I won't know for sure until I give it a spin.
I guess, ultimately, we all are our own best judge of what is good and what isn't!!

Thanks for the heads up on this new source!!

"The sound is a bit imbalanced, though"

I downloaded this off of etree yesterday, and to me it sounded like a radio broadcast for some reason (although I don't know anything about music and my ears are constantly ringing). Maybe it's the acoustics of the venue or something with the mics, but it just sounds weird to me. Good, but weird.

Maybe because it sounds a bit punchier than the SBD, and the vocals definitely sound like they're coming out of speakers. The quality's almost clean enough to be a broadcast rather than an AUD.
Good as it is, I wish the taper had found a more central spot so the band would be in fuller stereo...

I haven't listened to the soundboard so that couldn't have colored my judgement, but it just sounds a little bit off to me, and saying that it sounds like a recording off of the radio is the best way that I can describe it. Maybe he was too close to the stage and he was picking up the stage monitors and missing most of the PA speakers? Or did they even have stage monitors back then?

Dec 73 AUDs are mandatory listening in my opinion. Thanks for the headsup.

This is one of the best damn shows I've ever heard. Maybe my favorite show of the year.

If this sbd wasn't so flawless, I would agree:

With a sbd that good, I personally think splicing it with the aud would only take away from the recording. If the aud was really great, it might work, but I can't imagine it sounding any better than the above CM source. With a flat sbd, mixing it with the aud usually fills out the depth a bit. But with such a clean, full sounding recording, a matrix doesn't really serve to improve the sound imo.

Actually, a MTX might be kinda nice. I just checked out the aud from etree. Sounds pretty damn good. But like LIA noted, very little crowd noise. Bob's guitar is very clear in the mix, which is nice though. And I think Jubal might have started on this one already.

Yes, it sounds like a matrix is already underway.
I'm also wondering whether it would be that useful because the AUD and SBD sound so much like each other - mainly a louder Weir, and more 'room tone' from Phil & drums.

Yea, other than that room tone, I don't know if there's anything else from the AUD that would make this a great matrix. An aud with little crowd noise isn't the ideal candidate for a MTX, to give you that "in the show" feel, but I'm curious to hear what this will sound like.

I couldn't help myself. Didn't wanna wait to see what this would sound like. After putting this together, I don't believe this is a good candidate for a MTX. The SBD is too good already. Just detracts from it imo, as I suspected.
